Presenting at the 2015 Coursera Partner’s Conference

I just thought I would leave a note here that I will be doing a poster presentation at the beginning of March in Irvine at the 2015 Coursera Partner’s Conference.  I have never done a poster presentation before, but I am looking forward to the informal method of talking to other Coursera users.  My title will be “Is MOOCwork Ephemeral?” and will focus on how we used Digication portfolios to create a more permanent repository for the assignments within our Introduction to Computational Arts course (led by Dr. Margaret Schedel).

Here is a complete list of the presenters:

Jumped the Shark

Turning Technologies will last a few more seasons, but Fall 2014 will be the year when they jumped the shark.  It’s too close to the advent of newer methods of student responses for such a large hiccup.  Really a shame they couldn’t have gone out more peacefully.

I’m happy to say that it is supposed to work much better this spring. (Installing the new version on my computer as we speak.)  You can check to see if you have the newest version by opening up your application, then clicking on the TurningPoint Cloud logo at the bottom on the screen.  A window will appear and one of the buttons is Check for Updates.

A gift of sharing that the internet brings us

There certainly can be a lot of things that we get to see on the internet that perhaps we really rather not see, but there is also a wonder of animal behavior videos that are incredible. When I think about the not so long ago debates about whether animals have a sense of self, can use tools, are problem solvers, have feelings.. well the internet has busted that wide open. If anyone has any doubt, they should really take a look.

Also, think about this: Just as some researchers are able to use google maps and google earth to find new sets of data, so too is new information lurking inside the millions of home videos that are loaded day in, day out to youtube. What can you drill down for?

Send Message mode will not get you points in class

Before you even answer a poll in class… how many icons are on your screen?  Does it look like this?

SM

It shouldn’t. This is the Send Message mode. Theoretically it is for asking the instructor questions during polling – but no one uses it really, and the messages you send go into a weird report that they never really have a reason to look at, so they won’t be seen.

It should look like this:

To get out of Send Message mode… you must hit that back arrow in the lower left corner.
